We love labeling people. For as long as I can remember, I’ve attempted to create symbols, metaphors and labels wrapped in meaning to sum people up in elegant terms.

Rather than try to change or work against this natural tendency, I’ve learned to work with it. One of the tools I use is the Myers Briggs Type Indicator.

In general, we’re talking about using the MBTI to build unusually effective teams of various sizes, experience and disciplines. In specific, we’re going to zero in on the question: Are there ideal types for the startup Holy Trinity? What about engineers, generalists, product managers, designers, and marketers?

The truth is, MBTI is one tool in a comprehensive assessment we conduct at RPG Labs. After studying it for over 10 years, it’s remained in my toolbox, though the application has changed.

Caveat: Any type can succeed in any role, provided it’s tailored to their personality preferences. An ISTJ CEO is going to behave and function much differently than an ENTP CEO, but both can work if the desire and discipline is there.
